How I Help
Introduction to Retirement Planning

Whether retirement is decades away or right around the corner, the advisors at Smith Complete Wealth will help you create a roadmap designed to support the life you envision. That starts with a clear-eyed assessment of where you stand today: your retirement savings, your income sources, your projected expenses, and your timeline.

From there, we develop a strategy that accounts for inflation, tax implications, and the lifestyle you want to maintain. Retirement planning isn't a set-it-and-forget-it exercise, and we treat it accordingly. Your plan should continue to evolve as your life, goals, and financial circumstances change.

The Questions That Come Up as Retirement Gets Closer

Potential and current clients often come to us with the big questions that keep them up at night: When can I retire? Am I going to have enough money by then? When should I start taking my Social Security? What happens if the market dips? Am I going to run out of money? How much income will I actually need to maintain my current lifestyle?

While financial advisors don’t have a crystal ball to tell you what’s going to happen and exactly how your retirement is going to play out, working with Smith Complete Wealth to plan your retirement can help you take proactive steps toward preparing for retirement and navigating life's financial changes. By combining our years of experience with sophisticated software, we can help you feel as confident as possible for your retirement years.

What Goes into a Comprehensive Retirement Plan?

Retirement planning at Smith Complete Wealth is multi-pronged and highly personal. We like to keep your part of the planning as easy as possible, so we’ll meet with you to go over the information we need to create a comprehensive plan, partner together to make sure all these pieces fit into your pie plate (so to speak), and give you the confidence to know you’re ready to handle any “what if”.

Retirement Income

We’ll review how your current and potential savings, investments, pensions, Social Security, and other income sources can work together to help support your retirement goals and future expenses.

Social Security

We’ll provide input on when you could consider claiming benefits and how Social Security fits into the larger plan. Social Security retirement benefits can generally begin as early as age 62, but the benefit amount depends in part on when you claim relative to your full retirement age and whether you delay benefits.

Investments & Risk

We’ll make sure your investment strategy is appropriate for your goals, timeline, risk tolerance, and retirement income needs. As retirement approaches, the balance between investment growth, income needs, and risk can become increasingly important.

Taxes

We’ll walk you through how withdrawals from a 401(k), traditional IRA, Roth IRA, and other retirement accounts, required distributions, and other decisions may affect taxes over time. Having retirement savings with different tax treatments can also provide additional options when determining where retirement income should come from.

Healthcare & Extended Care

We’ll help you prepare for healthcare costs, Medicare, and potential extended-care needs. Medical and care-related expenses can become an increasingly important part of the retirement budget as we age, making them an important part of long-term planning.

Estate & Legacy Considerations

We’ll make sure your beneficiaries, family goals, charitable interests, and other long-term wishes are considered as part of the larger retirement picture.

We want your process from prospect to joining the Smith Complete Wealth family to be as easy as possible. We generally follow the below steps when bringing on a new client, tailoring it to add or remove conversations for your unique needs. These meetings can take place at our office in Spring Hill, TN or via Zoom—whichever is more comfortable for you.

  1. Contact us by calling the office at (931) 674-2082 or clicking the "Contact Form" button at the bottom of this page.
  2. Initial Conversation: We’ll reach out to schedule an Initial Conversation to learn more about you and what you’re looking for. This is usually done as a 5- to 10-minute phone call—think of it as a quick meet-and-greet with one of our team members.
  3. Deep-Dive Conversation: During the Initial Conversation, we’ll get you scheduled for a Deep-Dive Conversation with one of our financial advisors, during which they’ll look your current financial picture and your future goals. During this meeting, we’ll gather the information needed to put together a comprehensive financial plan for you.
  4. Final Conversation: We’ll set up a Final Conversation with our financial advisors where you’ll get to see what we can do for you—we’ll walk you through the financial plan, ways we can help you reach your goals, and how to become a client if you choose to proceed.

Once you become a client, we’ll work with you to make sure you hear from us on a schedule that fits your personality, whether that’s frequent updates or a hands-off approach.

Who We Help With Retirement Planning

Who We Help With Retirement Planning

We work with individuals and families at various stages of their financial lives — from early-career professionals focused on building wealth to retirees looking to manage income and preserve what they've built. Many of our clients are in Middle Tennessee (Williamson County, Maury County, Davidson County, and Cheatham County), but we have various others throughout Tennessee and numerous states across the country.

We're honored that so many hardworking blue-collar families, manufacturing & utility professionals, and pre-retirees turn to Smith Complete Wealth for their comprehensive financial planning. We also work with small business owners, high-net-worth individuals, and anyone who wants a thoughtful, personalized approach to their finances.

We do not currently have a minimum asset level for new clients. We want to work with good people who value hard work and honesty. If that’s you, we’d love to meet you!

Retirement Planning FAQs

We know many of the questions you have require answers unique to your situation. Below we’ve provided answers to some of the more general questions that our prospective clients typically ask.

When should I start planning for retirement?

The simple answers: now. Many of our clients fall into the mid- or late-career categories, where we're helping fine-tune and reset their paths while they still have time to make impactful changes. But it’s never too early to start; starting to save money and plan earlier gives your retirement savings more time to benefit from potential investment growth and compounding. We’re happy to work with early career professionals to make sure they’re setting the stage for success.

Can you help me if I'm already retired?

Absolutely! Our advisors are particularly skilled at reviewing your complete financial life to make sure you’re taking advantage of every opportunity offered to you and provide recommendations on changes you may want to make if things are feeling a little off.

How do I know if I have enough money to retire?

There is no single savings number that works for everyone. We’ll use our extensive experience and advanced software to run models based on your current financial picture, expected income, future expenses, retirement age, and retirement goals. If your current strategy isn’t going to get you where you want to go, we can do everything from fine tuning to complete overhaul when it comes to how you save, invest, and prepare for retirement.

What should a retirement plan include?

At Smith Complete Wealth, retirement plans cover your full financial picture, taking into account investments, retirement accounts, income needs, taxes, health care, estate plans, and more. We firmly believe that focusing on just one area of your finances isn’t sufficient to give you the financial confidence you deserve as you look toward your much-earned retirement.

Can you help me decide when to take Social Security?

Yes; Social Security benefits can generally be claimed beginning at age 62, but deciding when to begin is a personal decision affected by many factors. Your retirement age, other income sources, health, family circumstances, and overall financial plan may all play a role, and we’d be happy to help you evaluate your options.

Can you work with my CPA or attorney?

Of course. We have a fantastic network of financial professionals that we work with on behalf of our current clients. Whether you have a CPA/attorney or need to get connected, we’re happy to be part of your financial team.
