How I Help
Introduction to Portfolio Management
The advisors at Smith Complete Wealth build and monitor each client’s investment portfolio based on your risk tolerance, time horizon, and long-term objectives—adjusting as your life evolves. Our portfolio management strategy is rooted in research and ongoing analysis, not market speculation or reactionary thinking. We evaluate asset allocation, diversification, portfolio performance, and risk with a disciplined eye, making strategic adjustments when the data supports it. No two portfolios at Smith Complete Wealth look alike, as they’re designed to meet your unique investment objectives and personal goals.
*Asset allocation does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss. There is no guarantee that a diversified portfolio will enhance overall returns or outperform a non-diversified portfolio. Diversification does not protect against market risk. Investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal.
What Should Your Portfolio Be Designed to Accomplish?
Portfolio Management at Smith Complete Wealth is multi-pronged and highly personal. We're frequently in touch with our clients to help ensure their portfolios are meeting their ever-changing lives and needs. We’ll work together to make sure all these pieces fit into your pie plate, so to speak, and give you the confidence to know you’re ready to handle any “what-ifs.”
Asset Allocation
We’ll dissect how investments are divided among different asset classes based on your goals, timeline, and risk considerations. Stocks, bonds, and cash are among the common asset classes used when constructing a portfolio. Strategic asset allocation establishes target percentages for these investments so the whole portfolio can pursue long-term growth while seeking to balance risk.
Diversification
We’ll walk through why spreading investments across different areas can help manage portfolio risk rather than relying too heavily on one company, sector, or type of investment. This may involve mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, individual stocks, bonds, or other investment options instead of depending on a single investment.
Risk Management
We’ll determine how you evaluate the amount and types of risk you want to take and whether that risk continues to make sense for your changing financial situation. Aggressive investors may accept more volatility through higher-risk investments such as growth stocks, while conservative investors may favor more stable investments, such as bonds. The appropriate balance depends on your financial objectives, time horizon, and comfort with market fluctuations.
Investment Selection
We’ll discuss how investments are evaluated and selected within the broader strategy. Portfolio management decisions may incorporate active management, passive management, or a combination of the two. Active management involves portfolio managers or fund managers actively buying and selling investments in an effort to outperform a benchmark index. Passive portfolio management commonly uses index funds or exchange-traded funds to mirror a market index. Because actively managed funds may carry higher fees and transaction costs, investment costs are an important consideration for long-term returns.
Rebalancing & Monitoring
We’ll share how portfolios are reviewed over time and adjusted when markets, goals, or circumstances change. For example, a portfolio with a target allocation of 70% stocks could shift to 80% after market gains. Rebalancing may involve trimming overweight investments and directing the proceeds toward underweighted assets. Performance monitoring can also compare portfolio returns with appropriate benchmarks.
Managing Investments as Retirement Gets Closer
As retirement approaches, the role of your portfolio often begins to shift from primarily growing assets to helping support the income needed for your lifestyle. This transition may involve evaluating how much market risk is appropriate while maintaining confidence that your investments remain aligned with your long-term goals.
We work to coordinate your investment strategy with other important income sources, including Social Security benefits, pensions, and personal savings. Thoughtful planning around withdrawals from retirement accounts can also help support tax efficiency and retirement income strategy. At the same time, retirement can last 20, 30, or even more years, making continued growth an important part of the conversation. That's why Portfolio Management and Retirement Planning work hand in hand, helping ensure your investments are positioned not only for today's needs, but also for the opportunities and challenges that may lie ahead.

Who We Help With Portfolio Management
We work with individuals and families at various stages of their financial lives — from early-career professionals focused on building wealth to retirees looking to manage income and preserve what they've built. Many of our clients are in Middle Tennessee (Williamson County, Maury County, Davidson County, and Cheatham County), but we have many others throughout Tennessee and various other states across the country.
We're honored that so many hardworking blue-collar families, manufacturing & utility professionals, and pre-retirees turn to Smith Complete Wealth for their comprehensive financial planning. We also work with small business owners, high-net-worth individuals, and anyone who wants a thoughtful, personalized approach to their finances.
We do not currently have a minimum asset level for new clients. We want to work with good people who value hard work and honesty. If that’s you, we’d love to meet you!
Portfolio Management FAQs
We know many of the questions you likely have require answers unique to your situation. Below we’ve provided answers to some of the more general questions that our prospective clients typically have.
What is portfolio management?
Portfolio management is the ongoing process of designing, monitoring, and adjusting an investment strategy to help you achieve your financial goals. It combines investment selection, risk management, and long-term planning to keep your portfolio aligned with your objectives.
How do you determine how much investment risk I should take?
We assess your risk tolerance by understanding your financial goals, time horizon, income needs, and comfort level with market fluctuations. This allows us to build a strategy that balances growth opportunities with the level of risk that feels appropriate for you.
How often will my portfolio be reviewed?
Your portfolio is monitored continuously and reviewed regularly in an effort to ensure it remains aligned with your goals and market conditions. The frequency of how we communicate about those reviews can be determined (based on your preferences) when you become a Smith Complete Wealth client. We also revisit your strategy whenever there are significant life changes or shifts in your financial priorities.
How do you decide which investments to use?
We focus on high-quality investments that fit your goals, risk profile, and long-term financial plan. Our investment decisions are guided by thorough research, diversification, and a disciplined approach designed to create lasting value.
Will my investment strategy change when I retire?
Yes. As you transition into retirement, your investment strategy may evolve to reflect your income needs, lifestyle goals, and changing risk tolerance. We work to balance continued growth with the preservation of wealth and reliable income generation.
Can you review investments I already own?
Yes. We can evaluate your existing investments to determine how they fit within your overall financial plan and identify opportunities to improve diversification and evaluate portfolio risk in relation to your objectives.
Can you manage my 401(k) or other retirement accounts?
Yes. We can help manage and provide guidance for employer-sponsored retirement plans, IRAs, and other retirement accounts in an effort to ensure they are aligned with your broader financial goals and retirement strategy.
What happens to my portfolio when the market declines?
Market declines are a normal part of investing, and we believe it's important to stay disciplined rather than react emotionally. During market downturns, we focus on maintaining a balanced approach and evaluating portfolios in light of long-term objectives. We're here to provide steady guidance and confidence when markets become uncertain.
